Trauma-Informed School Approach
At St Edmund’s Catholic School, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported. We understand that some students may face challenges outside of school that can impact their ability to learn, build relationships, and thrive. That is why we are proud to be developing as a trauma-informed school.
What Does It Mean to Be Trauma-Informed?
Being trauma-informed means we:
- Recognise the impact of trauma on learning, behaviour, and wellbeing
- Respond with empathy and understanding, not judgement
- Create safe, predictable environments where all students feel secure
- Support emotional regulation and resilience through our curriculum and pastoral care
- Work in partnership with families and external services to provide the best possible support
Why It Matters
Research shows that trauma can affect brain development, emotional regulation, and behaviour. By adopting trauma-informed practices, we help students feel safe and connected—key ingredients for learning and growth. This approach benefits all students, not just those with known experiences of trauma.
What You’ll See in Our School
In our trauma-informed school, you will see:
- Staff trained in trauma awareness and responsive strategies
- A calm, nurturing environment with clear routines
