Future Careers: Every career you enter into you will require some level of mathematics. Passing your GCSE mathematics will open many doors and allow students to access to A-Levels and/or further education.

In mathematics, we follow the Key Stage 4 national curriculum from year 10 to year 11. Within the curriculum we explore, create, construct and investigate many areas of mathematics. We focus in on areas of STEM where possible and bring maths into real life context for our students. We strive for all students to be able to answer questions in fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We follow Rosenshine’s principles of instruction. By using the principles, successful teaching enables new material to move into students’ long-term memory, linked to their existing knowledge. This means when students are faced with a new problem, they can automatically recall information they already know to help solve it. Students are also given think hard questions which makes them “think”” read “and “write” like a Mathematician.

There are two options for the exam, a Higher paper which covers topics ranging from grade 9 to 4 or a Foundation paper which covers grades 5 to 1. Grade 5 is now considered to be a good pass at GCSE and is the target for all students to achieve as a minimum.
