The BTEC First Award in Music is a practical, vocational course which also involves significant written work to support learning. The course is based around real life scenarios and activities relevant to areas of the actual music industry. These aim to introduce students to the music industry and prepare them for appropriate jobs and making personal decisions relevant to the industry, through the development of key skills.

BTEC music supports pupils in forming personal and meaningful relationships with music through the development of musical knowledge, understanding and skills including performing, monitoring development of their own skills planning and delivering projects, events and products. Pupils will need to engage critically and creatively with a wide range of music and musical contexts, develop an understanding of the place of music in different cultures and contexts, and reflect on how music is used in the expression of personal and collective identities.
Pupils opting for BTEC music will need to be open-minded to a wide variety of musical styles. They will need proficiency in an instrument/voice and will need the self - discipline to regularly rehearse and develop their solo and ensemble performing skills. The study of BTEC music provides pupils with music specific skills and transferable skills in equal measure.
