KS3

When pupils arrive in year 7, they spend a week being taught in their form groups, working on tasks related to handling data. During this time, they sit their CATs (Cognitive Ability Tests). The results of these, along with their Key Stage 2 score enables the school to set student’s dependant on ability. We have within Edmunds a Grammar stream group of students who have achieved consistently well at key stage 2 in all their primary school subjects. These students are progressed at a faster rate appropriate for their ability.

In mathematics, we follow the Key Stage 3 national curriculum from year 7 to year 9. Within the curriculum we explore, create, construct, and investigate many areas of mathematics. We focus in on areas of STEM where possible and bring maths into real life context for our students. We strive for all students to be able to answer questions in fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We follow Rosenshine’s principles of instruction. By using the principles, successful teaching enables new material to move into students’ long-term memory, linked to their existing knowledge. This means when students are

faced with a new problem, they can automatically recall information they already know to help solve it. Students are also given think hard questions which makes them “think”” read “and “write” like a Mathematician.

Exploring area, perimeter, and volume of any prism.

Working with percentages including real life problems including simple and compound interest.

 

Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Understanding and calculating probabilities.

Understanding more complex diagrams relating to probability.

 

Generating sequences. Finding and using the nth term. Manipulating inequalities.

Investigating ratio and proportion using real life scenarios.

 

Manipulating indices including negative and fractional.

Investigating angles in polygons. Exploring similarity, congruence.

 

Exploring Pythagoras; Theorem and solving real life problems using Pythagoras.

 

Construction and Loci.

Metric Conversion. Using powers of 10 to perform calculations in standard form.

 

Interpreting statistical charts. Forming and solving equations within shapes

Manipulate algebraic expressions by expanding the product of two / three binomials.

 

Rearranging formula and equations. Investigating properties of circle. Plans and elevations.
