Languages currently offered: French, Spanish and Italian

Aims

  • To enable students to communicate in a foreign language.
  • To create an awareness of and thereby foster an understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
  • To encourage an atmosphere of learning through enjoyment.
 

Objectives

  • Presentation of new lexical items and structures.
  • Consolidation of materials covered in previous years, including primary school.
  • Practice at various levels in the four skills areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
  • Use of authentic materials, relevant exercises and everyday communicative language.

Theses topics may be covered in any order, and will provide the context in which basic language functions and notions are taught in conjunction with basic concepts of grammar.
 

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 content is divided into themes and common topic areas:

Assessment

Throughout the period of study, pupils and students will be assessed in all four skill areas.

Key Stage 3

Grades achieved in Assessment Tests are recorded on reports sent to parents.

Key Stage 4

Students sit listening and reading exams at the end of Year 10. These are worth 40% of the final grade. Speaking and writing controlled assessment take place in Year 11. These are worth 60% of the final grade.

Homework

Thorough learning of material presented in school is an essential part of the programme of study in both Key Stages. Homework is set once a week during Key Stage 3 and twice a week during Key Stage 4.

Pupils are strongly advised to equip themselves with an appropriate bi-lingual dictionary containing a minimum of 70,000 translations.

A Level

Students who achieve a good grade at GCSE can continue their studies in French or Spanish by following an A Level course.  They will study both language and culture and will be expected to reach a high standard in both writing and speaking in the foreign language about a range of topics.

Students will be expected to read extensively in their own time.

Those students who are willing to spend some time in the country of their studies will greatly increase their chances of success at A Level.

This is a 100% exam course.  Students will take exams in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
