Citizenship

In the Citizenship department we have several aims for our students. They cover subjects such as law, government and global issues. We show children the importance of ICT and media within our lives, and how every individual is as important as the next.

Due to the nature of the course and the importance of learning respect for others and their opinions; debate is an important tool for us. By debating topics, children learn several skills including how and when they are able to voice their opinions in a polite and respectful manner. The outcome of Citizenship is to create positive behaviour and integration into society - to make people feel important, not lost.

Key Stage 3

By the end of Key Stage 3, our students should have covered several topics. Some of these topics are assessed. The subjects they will study are: Government and democracy nationally and internationally, voluntary organisations, human rights, diversity and identity, conflict resolution, law and punishment and the importance of a strong healthy community.

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 allows our students to become more immersed in the subject. We explore the above topics in greater detail showing more examples of good and bad practice within the world. We focus on the future and take particular care to introduce them to employment related issues as shortly these will be extremely important for all students as they enter adulthood. This includes looking at worker’s employment rights, work experience and also study skills, so they leave education with the best possible start.
