Dance

Dance is now taught throughout the school and offers a unique learning experience within the curriculum. The value of dance lies in the possibilities it offers for the pupils to develop creative, imaginative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacities. Pupils are encouraged to develop different styles. Dance is used as a means of expression and communication and students begin to find their own voice as creator, performer and critic.

Aims

  • To enjoy and develop this art form of physical activity.
  • To promote an understanding of an active and healthy life style.
  • To extend a range of dance movement vocabulary.
  • To increase physical and technical competence in a range of styles and techniques.
  • To perform expressively with a sense of musicality.
  • To develop an academic understanding for this art form.

Objectives

  • To develop in pupils a positive and knowledgeable appreciation of health and fitness, to help in the development of fitness, co-ordination and muscular strength.
  • For pupils to acquire a practical and theoretical knowledge of different dance genres.
  • For pupils to develop performance and choreographic skills
  • Within the sphere of personal and social education the pupils will have opportunities to develop qualities of co-operation, determination, responsibility, enthusiasm, conduct and tolerance.
  • Cross-curricular opportunities will be enhanced.

Vertical tutor Group

Pupils will have the opportunity to enter into a specialist tutor group and share dance expertise within the group

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Pupils will be encouraged to experience different dance styles. They will develop a range of complex movement patterns and techniques and reinforce the dance vocabulary and notation skills. Opportunities will be given to pupils to enhance their creative and choreographic skills and to develop their performance skills through their dances.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

Pupils will continue to experience different dance genres, they will reflect upon different social and cultural contexts. Opportunities will be given for pupils to perform and develop their presentation skills. Pupils will examine artistic intention and begin to analyse certain choreographic pieces.

GCSE Dance

The aim of this course is to develop understanding and appreciation of a range of dance styles. Pupils will develop aesthetic and artistic sensibility to dance works, and they will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to perform, choreograph and appreciate dance.

20% of the marks written examination

AS Dance

Students are expected to acquire experience of choreography and performance and to engage in critical thinking about dance. They are required to study one set work and to have some understanding of the cultural context from which it derives.
