Geography is a wide-ranging subject, a synthesis between the sciences, both physical and social and the arts, in itself integrated and interdisciplinary. It provides a broad, general education so is worth of study for this reason alone, as well as for examination needs. Young people take a lively interest in world problems and environmental issues so Geography helps provide some answers, or at least direct students towards being able to discover an answer for themselves. Geography demands an elementary understanding of a wide range of subjects including physics, biology, geology, chemistry and statistics on the one hand, with economics, history, psychology and sociology on the other. Geography should enable those studying it to understand and appreciate some of the complexities of the world in which we live. In time and with maturity, students of Geography mat offer reasoned, informed opinion on topics that are of concern today. These could range from the environmental to the political. The department aims to foster an awareness of environment and community: an understanding of people, places and the relationships between them. To equip students with a variety of skills: numerical, written, oral and analytical; to enable pupils to be able to make decisions, solve problems and be aware of the importance of the attitudes and values. These skills are transferable to other subjects. Key Stage 3Six modules are taught in each of years 7, 8 and 9, following DfES guidelines. End of topic assessments, enquiry and project work provide the tools to assess pupil progress in conjunction with class and homework tasks. It is expected that fieldwork through the process of a geographical enquiry will be carried out throughout Key Stage 3. It is very important that pupils have a taste of the whole process to prepare them for Geography GCSE. Therefore the format of these enquiries will be based on the GCSE format and will have a similar marking scheme. Fieldwork will also be a vehicle in which to teach and formally assess pupils' ICT skills in accordance with the National Curriculum. Key Stage 4The GCSE course follows the AQA specification 'A' syllabus covering over years 10 and 11. A Level GeographyThe AS/A2 course follows the AQA specification 'A' syllabus. Coursework i a requirement for both GCSE and A Level examinations. For pupils to be successful at producing good quality coursework, they need to practice managing their own time. working to deadlines, using resources, producing annotated illustrative material and developing the skills required to write fluently. |
