Film Studies

Film Studies is offered as an A level course to students in Year 12 and 13.

Aims

Film and television are well recognised as being a major component of 21st century culture with the clear potential to influence, inform and entertain.

The course aims to develop high level skills in analysis, research and communication whilst encouraging creativity in production exercises relating to the examination specifications. Students will investigate film as an industry including marketing and control. They will also study the issues regarding the effects of film on an audience.

Expectations

Students applying for this course will have a genuine passion for movies and a willingness to combine creativity and imagination with the rigours of academic study. As well as viewing a diverse range of films, they will investigate the language of film, the ideology within film and the historical, sociological and psychological contexts in which films are made.

Outcomes

Broadly, an A Level qualification in Film will count towards the entry requirements for Further and Higher Education. Specifically, it could provide a vocational route into either the film or television industries. It will provide students with the opportunities to develop their own particular strengths, (e.g. academic, technological, creative), as well as encouraging them to discover completely new skills and areas of interest.
